It’s true! God actually WANTS us to be two-faced, but not like we normally understand the phrase. Two-faced usually means that we are liars and hypocrites, but of course God certainly does not want that, so keep reading!
All humans actually have two faces too. Their spiritual face should always be looking at Jesus, while the other face should always be looking to be a blessing to others, but there are many who are not looking at Jesus because they don’t know who He really is.
Many people have at least heard of Jesus, but much of what they have heard are lies. They have heard that He is “loving”, but that you had better watch out because if you step out of line, He gets very angry and will punish you way beyond what is reasonable, fair and just. Because of lies like these many choose not to look at Jesus Who is the source of light. They are like the so-called “dark fibers”. (Besides, why would anyone want to look at a Jesus Who sounds like a “bully”? Doesn’t it make you want to get the truth out about who Jesus really is?)
Jesus said that there are two things we need to seek for first.
“Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness”
Think of these as being two faces like the optical fiber we just talked about.
Our spiritual face should always be looking at Jesus because He is just, fair, faithful, kind, and deeply caring. He is love itself. (We let His light in through this spiritual face.)
Jesus wants us to be free of pain and death, and so He offers us a life that will never end. He offers us a life that is not only free from all pain and suffering, but one that is full of joy and happiness, peace and love. When we accept His free offer of this eternal life we become a part of His kingdom, and that means we have let His light in.
When we learn the truth about who Jesus is we will want our characters to be like His. We will try to do the things He did. We will try to emulate His life, and because everything that He did was a blessing to someone we will try to be a blessing to people too.
(By the way, this is the only face of ours that other people will see. They will not see us as two-faced and dishonest, but loving, fair and kind.) Let’s ask Jesus to remove anything from our lives that will distort or block His light, the truth about who He is and what He is going to do, from getting out.
As Christians we need to look constantly at Jesus with our spiritual face, and then with our physical face we should always be looking for ways to be a blessing to those around us.
“Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a huge crowd of [false] witnesses to the life of faith [Jesus], let us strip off every weight that slows us down [anything that will block or distort His light], especially the sin that so easily trips us up. And let us run with endurance the race God has set before us [Let’s show the world who Jesus really is!]. We do this by keeping our eyes on Jesus, the champion who initiates and perfects our faith….”
Let’s be like an optical fiber. Let the light of Jesus into our lives through our spiritual face so that when others see our public face, they see Jesus as He really is.
