Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.
It’s such a cozy feeling to wake up to a leisurely morning. I just can crawl out of bed, throw on a cozy robe, and grab a warm something to drink while settling down for some quiet reading or music. Sounds dreamy, right? Well, trust me; it doesn’t look that way. I’m not a vain person, but I would never let YOU catch me looking so sleepy-eyed before a shower, with my bed-head hair, wrinkly pajamas and funny slippers! Never!
Why? Because I care too much what you think of my appearance. (Even my husband is shielded from this privileged scene unless absolutely necessary!) You see, I don’t want to give the wrong impression to anyone who might see me in that scenario. Assumptions might arise, like: “Poor Lucy, she must not be feeling well.” “Ha! Lucy forgot to look in the mirror this morning!” “If this is how Lucy cares for herself, think of how she cares for other things in her responsibility.” Etc.
What this verse says to me: I am God’s chosen person who is so dearly loved by God that He even considers me holy! Therefore, I wish to clothe myself to represent God in the way that He wants to be represented by me. Specifically, He cares how I treat others. But He also cares what others think about Him, through my representation via… Compassion. Kindness. Humility. Gentleness. Patience.
So this is what Jesus looks like.
